Why the Midwife Online?

Motherhood is beautiful but it is definitely not all baby cuddles and soft music in the background. It gets messy and I am here to help prepare you so that you know what to expect and not get taken by surprise. The lessons are honest, realistic and evidence-based with a bit of humour because that is the only way to survive parenthood 😉

My goal is to equip new parents for this journey as much as possible because it is one wild ride but the most amazing experience I have ever had, and I want you to have all the information you need to get off to a great start.

okay but ...

It is a pre-recorded course with videos of between a 1- 10 minutes long that you can watch on your own time and at your own pace. Your partner is welcome to join and you can rewatch at any time.

  • First-time mothers and parents.
  • You can join from early on in pregnancy until taking your baby home, feeding schedules and coping during the first few weeks.
  • Adoptive parents or surrogate parents are welcome to join as there are courses relevant to each unique situation.
  • Parents of twins or other multiples

Designed for first-time parents but all parents-to-be are welcome to join for a refresher!

Please note that I am not in a position to offer any advice or medical diagnosis to your current pregnancy as I have not examined you personally. However, I am always just an email away if you have any burning questions in general or want to connect if you need a shoulder to lean on.

Consider asking on mommy support groups, Google or friends/family for referrals to someone that specialises in postpartum maternal health and/or depression. It is important to reach out if you feel like you are not coping and get the necessary help.

Unfortunately I am not able to offer in-person classes due to my family and work commitments. I assure you that you will find all the relevant information in this course and you are still welcome to send me a mail with more questions if you have.

Uhm yes … pregnancy and childbirth follow the same process regardless of your location, upbringing, culture, race or any other factors. The things that might differ include:

  • the baby products I talk about
  • the sequence of admission procedures may vary
  • certain practices in your environment such as delayed cord clamping or skin-to-skin care
  • the dialect 🙂 I may refer to nappies while you refer to diapers!
  • treatment for certain conditions may vary
  • traditional or cultural practices you are/are not familiar with
  • your partner’s openness to join this course and learn about more detail they ever dreamt of before!
  • the treatment from healthcare professionals in your environment
  • the healthcare structure (private or public hospitals) in your environment
  • the resources in your environment for additional support

This can be a tricky one. Not all partners want to know every bit of detail about what your body is going through or will be going through. This is up to you because you know your partner best, BUT I can give you a bit of a heads-up perhaps:

  • I say vagina a lot … because well that is the correct term and babies are not born out of flowers, cookies or nunus. We talk facts here 🙂
  • There is a lot of mention of bodily fluids including blood, mucus, milk and more. Can your partner stomach these kind of conversations?
  • I talk about breastfeeding and I have a very cute little silicone breast for demonstration purposes – there is a lot of squeezing in a non-romantic way. Prepare your partner!
  • I talk about sex after having a baby. It is important and your partner should know these things but I’m still giving you a heads-up.
  • If your partner is reluctant, at the very least they can join the mental health and postpartum section to be able to better support you.

It is really not that bad, your partner is about to enter a world of baby pee, poo, spit-up, projectile vomiting and more. They might as well start somewhere!
